Updated 30 October 2015

Words you may need to know

Certified - an official statement

Registered -  an official record of something

Bereavement - someone has died or passed away

Post- Mortem - an enquiry into someone's death carried out by a Pathologist who is a specialist medic

Instructed - given permission or authority to deal with the matter

A death has to be certified and registered within five days ( See 8.45.12.L7) so a doctor will have to be called to provide the death certificate.

If the death is sudden, contact the person's GP (if known) or the Ambulance Service and Police (if unknown or a visitor).  Victim Support can offer help if it is required, (telephone 769700), or The General Hospital  will put you in touch with someone who can provide bereavement support in the event of sudden death or following a post-mortem.  Any local funeral director who is instructed will make all the necessary funeral and other arrangements.
