Introduction

To set up a charity it is important to establish the aims and objectives of the group, and formalise the appointment and responsibilities of the officers of the group. This is normally achieved by writing a constitution, and a model constitution for small charities is available on the website of the Association of Jersey Charities.

Banking facilities need to be established and evidence of the setting up of the group or organisation should be sent to the Comptroller of Income Tax with a letter requesting tax exemption.

Once tax exemption is granted it is necessary to register with the Jersey Financial Services Commission.

The Association of Jersey Charities website has full details on how to set up a charity:

http://jerseycharities.org/setting-upregistering-a-charity-in-jersey.html

Joining the Association of Jersey Charities is also a good idea as there are a number of benefits including:

-          advice and assistance on setting up a charity

-          grants available from Lottery funds

-          a diary of events throughout the year is maintained to help avoid two or more large fundraising events taking place on the same day.
