What is Post-natal depression

1 It is an illness which affects ten per cent of mothers following the birth of their babies.

What are the symptoms

2 Some of the symptoms appear contradictory. The key is that they are usually excessive or obsessional and that the woman has 'changed' in herself since the arrival of her baby.

Continual feelings of fatigue / exhaustion, Desire for sleep, Continually restless / busy / agitated, / Inability to sleep.
Weight gain / weight loss
Inability to cope with household chores - untidy mess
Inability to stop doing household chores - too immaculate
Has become unkempt in personal appearance
Has become excessively immaculate in appearance
Has lost sparkle, joie de vivre, fun
Does not go out - has become a recluse
Tearful without reason
Angry often aggressive towards loved ones and friends
Rejects offers of help
Feeling physically unwell - often heavy limbs and aches
Irritated easily - especially by noise
Extremely concerned for the welfare of the baby
Irrational thoughts, Desire to harm self or others
Feeling very alone, cut off from life
Despair, ashamed because you feel you are not a good mother
Constant feeling of having PMS
Symptoms worse just before a period starts
