LOCAL INFORMATION

10.6.0.L1
Blood donation

Extent: Jersey
Updated 11 November 2013
---------------------------------------------------

Age Limits

The normal ages for giving blood is from 17 to 70, however, if the consultant in the Pathology Department considers that a person is in very good health, a regular donor may continue giving blood. New donors over the age of 65 are not normally recruited unless previously registered as donors in the UK.

Screening of blood and donors

All blood is screened and treated before being used for transfusion. Potential donors have to read through a questionnaire each time they are called to give blood to ensure that their circumstances have not changed.

Some people will not be acceptable as donors for their own health's sake if they are on certain types of medication, there is a risk that they might have been exposed to infection or temporarily, after an operation or child-birth. The guidelines are updated from time to time.
