Entry – here, when you go from one country into another

Money laundering – when sums of money got from criminal activity are made to look as if they have been got legally 

Monitor  - to watch over or look out for

Importation -  when something is brought into the country

Excise Revenue -  tax paid on certain goods coming into the country or manufactured in the country

Immigrant – someone coming into a country who does not normally live there 

Naturalization –  the process that you need to follow if you are in a country but not a citizen and you want to become a citizen or national of that country

Prohibited - forbidden

Smuggle – bring something into or out of a country against the law eg without paying taxes

Work permit – a document giving permission to work

 

Customs and Immigration

The Customs and Immigration Service is a government department. It has two main responsibilities:

-        it is responsible for controlling immigration on entry at Jersey harbours and airport

-        it monitors the importation of goods, involving the collection of customs and excise revenues and making sure attempts to smuggle prohibited or restricted goods, such as illegal drugs, are prevented.

 

For immigrants to Jersey, the Service provides controls both before and after entry.

The Service, which is part of the Home Affairs department, works with other agencies to investigate drug trafficking and money laundering offences.
