Liability for Debts / Club Members
Extent: Jersey
Updated 7 February 2019
---------------------------------------------------
If a club has debts, the members of the club will be liable for payment of the debts. A member of a club is still liable if they are not a fully paid up member. Only by resigning in writing will they exclude themselves from any future debt of the club.
A legal opinion was obtained from the Crown Officers with regard to the Public Health Workers' Club which had debts of £20,000 and each member had to pay £20.
NB: All resignations of any club should be made in writing. Clients should not allow membership to lapse as they may unwittingly become liable for debts they know nothing about.
