Debts - This is something that is owed to someone usually money

Time limit – How long you have to recover or get back what is owed

Time limit on debts:

  • Breach of Contract - 10 years from the date of the breach of contract. This includes claims against debtors;
  • Enforcement of Court Judgements for Debt- 10 years from the date of judgement;
  • Claims based on negligence- 3 years from the date when you suffered loss / damage;
  • Claims to share an estate- 1 year and 1 day from the date of death;


Gambling debts which are as a result of private bets or gaming, such as unlicensed card games, cannot be recovered in a court because that type of gambling is not lawful.

Gambling is controlled and Licenced under The Gambling (Jersey) Law 2012 and Regulations made thereunder.

The public are able to gamble only on games, lotteries etc for which a permit has been issued. All Gambling Licences, Permits, and Registrations are issued by the Jersey Gambling Commission.

These apply to all parties, being either commercial, charitable, or society, that wish to offer gambling to the public.
