LOCAL INFORMATION

10.4.70.L2
National Childbirth Trust [Jersey Branch]

Extent: Jersey
Updated 19 September 2016
---------------------------------------------------

The aim of National Childbirth Trust

Their aim is to help parents achieve greater enjoyment and satisfaction in pregnancy, birth and early parenthood. Ante-natal classes, support with breastfeeding and friendly encouragement after the baby is born are the most important aspects of their work.

Anti-natal classes

Ante-natal classes help to give an understanding of what happens in childbirth which can help reduce tension and anxiety and gives both partners the opportunity to enjoy pregnancy and to look forward to the birth with confidence.

Breastfeeding counsellors

Breastfeeding counsellors have all breastfed their own babies and are trained to help mothers establish and continue breastfeeding. They are flexible in their attitudes to infant feeding and they are positive and supportive if a mother chooses to bottle feed.

Their rôle is to offer support, information, practical skill and resources to help parents make informed choices for themselves and their babies. They do not offer medical advice and parents are asked to take any questions about the medical care of mother and baby to their midwife, health visitor or doctor.

New mothers

From first-hand experience, National Childbirth Trust members know that coping with a new baby can be daunting as well as an exciting experience. The Branch puts new mothers in touch with other members who are willing to offer friendship and the chance to meet socially and share experiences.

Meetings

The Jersey Branch holds meetings, with a film or speaker, at which an extensive library is available; fortnightly coffee mornings and a variety of other occasional social and fundraising activities.
